It was a rare day at St. Mary today. No wind. Warmish. We’ve had high wind warnings and gusts up to 90 mph recently, so the respite from cold wind felt like a gift from the gods.
The loop trail at St. Mary was blocked by snow so we walked for several miles along the shoreline of the lake on hardened snow. Glacier National Park is closed for the winter, and also affected by the government shutdown that has closed all national parks. But a few trails remain accessible even in winter.
I was surprised when a ranger came by a few minutes after we arrived at the trailhead to remind us not to bring our dog on the trail with us. He said the shutdown has been hard on him and the department. We sympathized.
